When I was a young woman, I spent two years living and working overseas. Wanting to make the most of my experience, I did as much traveling, sight seeing and souvenir collecting as I could. Everything was fine until I returned home to the states and was faced with my bill. A Company named VISA had kept careful records of all I owed, and when I looked at my debt, I was overwhelmed. I felt awful. I felt ashamed. For days I walked around depressed. How would I ever work off that debt with my low paying job? I didn't even have enough money to buy a car. My financial future was not bright.
One night, when I was talking with my fiancé on the phone, I told him everything. He listened quietly to the confession of my heavy heart. When I finished telling him about my situation he didn't give me a lecture. He didn't say, "I'm sure in time you'll be able to work off your debt." And he didn't say "I don't think I want a relationship with a person like you." Do you know what he said? He said, "Send me the bill."
My mouth dropped open in shock. First, I had no idea that my fiancé had such a large bank account. Second, I was stunned by the great gift he was offering me. Shouldn't "I" have had to pay for what "I" did? I was about to say, "I can't let you do that" when my fiancé spoke again. "We are going to be joined in a relationship together. We don't want to be carrying that debt around. Just send me the bill. I'll pay it."
You know what I did? I sent him the bill. And even though my husband never mentioned it again, I have never forgotten that event or the relief and freedom I felt because of it.
The cross of Jesus Christ is all about the payment of a debt. You and I walk through this life accumulating a debt of sin that we cannot possibly pay, no matter how hard we try or how long we work. We may feel overwhelmed and depressed by it all, but when we pour out our hearts to God and confess our sins to Him He says, "Send me the bill." In Jesus Christ's death on the cross that bill is "paid in full" and we enter into a life long love relationship with One who wants us to experience the awesome power of debt-free living. Jesus, your bridegroom, is waiting. Go ahead. Send Him your bill.
