God's Treasure Box
by: Dana Huffman
Deuteronomy 14:2 says, "Out of all the peoples on the face of the earth, the Lord has chosen you to be his treasured possession." This verse tells us what God thinks of us, his children. He's telling us, "I treasure you. You are of great value to me. You make me rich." Is that a hard message for you to accept?
A couple of months ago I got a card in the mail from my mother. My mother and I have lived miles apart for 15 years. During that time I have received lots of letters and many beautiful cards from her. But this time, in a simple note card she wrote, "I am so blessed to call you mine."
When I read those words I started to break down and cry. Why did they touch me so deeply? What power did those words carry? And why, last week, when I was feeling so crummy, did I get that note out again just so I could read the words "I am so blessed to call you mine"?
I was not an ideal daughter. At times I was a smart aleck. Sometimes I failed to do the smallest thing my mother asked. There were days I was so wrapped up in my own activities that I failed to notice her. And there were nights when I went to bed, that my mother went to work to pay for my activities or outfits. Why didn't my mother write "I am so worn out because your mine" or "I am so confused because you're mine" or "I am so spent because you're mine"? I knew my mom loved me, but wasn't it going just a little far to say that she was "blessed" to call me hers?
I guess the reason my mother's message touched me so deeply is that in my heart I believed what she wrote, even if it didn't make sense to me. You see if there's one thing I know about my mother, it's that she doesn't throw words around. If she says it, she means it. That's it.
Even though you and I may come up with some good arguments as to why God shouldn't go around calling us His "treasured possession" the fact remains that we are.
God doesn't throw words around. If He says it, He means it. That's it. We don't need to fully understand it to believe it's true.
What's in God's treasure box? You.
