Hand Writing On The Wall
by: Bruce Cook
The other day I was reading an article written by a minister about the Hand Writing on The Wall from the book of Daniel, chapter five. About how King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine before them. He commanded them to bring the golden vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple, the house of God which was in Jerusalem. That the King and his princes, his wives and his concubines, might drink from them. They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and of silver, of brass, of iron, of wood and of stone.
In that same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote upon the plaster of the wall of the kings palace. The king’s countenance was changed and his thoughts troubled him so that the joints of his loins were loosed and his knees smote one against another. The king called in all of his astrologers, chaldeans, wise men and soothsayers, but the wise men could not interpret the writing. When no one could be found that could interpret it the Queen recommended Daniel be brought before the king to show the interpretation.
Daniel told Belshazzar how God gave his father a kingdom and power. Because of this power, which he gave him, all peoples and nations trembled before him and were afraid. He put to death whom he would and spared whom he would, he promoted them at will and at will degraded them. But when he became haughty, stubborn and presumptuous, he was deposed of his royal throne and his glory was taken from him. He was banished from the society of men, his mind became like that of a beast. He had to live with the wild asses and eat grass like oxen, and his body was drenched with the dew of heaven, until he came to know that the most high God is over the kingdom of man and sets up over it whom he will.
But you Belshazzar, did not humble your heart, even though you knew all this. You have set yourself up against the Lord of Heaven. The vessels of his temple have been brought to your table: and you, your nobles, your concubines and your countesses have drank from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze and iron, of wood and stone, which neither see nor hear, nor know and you have not given glory to God. That is why that hand was sent from His very presence. God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end. You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting, and your kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. That very night Belshazzar King of the Chaldeans was slain and Darius the Mede took the kingdom.
As I thought about this after reading it a couple of times, it made me think about how it might apply to our times and actions of today. And I asked myself, is the handwriting on the wall for us just as it was for Belshazzar? Are we just not seeing it and if we do why are we not paying heed to it? Are we as Americans and other countries of the world just to blind to see it? Have we as Americans gone to far? Are we worshipping things of paper, metal, stone, and wealth which all consist of paper, silver, gold, bronze, iron, wood or stone?
In the last forty to fifty years we have tried to change areas of beliefs that have been our way of believing and living for the past two to three thousand years. People try to discredit the bible and God's word, to tell us that it doesn't mean this or that and it's okay. Well God's word never changes. And we are paying the bill for it and let me tell you it can and will get worse if we don't change our thinking, our ways and our actions.
God is trying to get our attention and we will not listen, so He has, as Father Corapi says, allowed us to be hit up along side of the head with such things as 911, tsunamis, floods, fires, droughts, burying our children and our soldiers, and all sorts of disasters, and it's only the beginning if we don't stop this decline into sinful ways of what we want to call reality. We live in an insane generation. We are out of touch with reality and are heading down a fast track to the end of our country's existence. You see only God is pure reality.
The world, the flesh and the devil are unceasingly attacking God's church and families every hour of the day. Because Satan knows that his time is growing short, he has increased his efforts to tempt and is succeeding in getting our country, world and society to turn from God. He knows that if he can cause the churches and families to fail or fall apart that we will become a Christian bankrupt society.
He has attacked and tempted our priests, pastors, preachers, evangelists and our Christian society causing a great number of them to fall or turn aside, or as I call it to backslide and harm or discredit the church and our Christian society. He wants to strike the shepherd and scatter the sheep. Satan knows that everyone has a weakness, so he waits until it is softened up, and then strikes. Hardships bring temptations, and we never become immune and are fair game for weakness and Satan.
He has attacked our families by causing over half of them to wind up in divorces, drugs, homosexuality, abortions, euthanasia, murders, suicides, alcohol, sexual promiscuity and gambling just to mention a few. Families are the moral fiber of our country, nation and our very existence as a civilized society. Dad's need to step up to the plate and be good dads, good husbands, and good fathers who will support, lead, teach and lead their families in the moral direction our country needs to go. The message that is going out to so much of society today is that fathers are simply not needed. While the number may numerically be small, there are some women who actually choose to be single parent mothers and there are many men in America today who father children that they have no intention of raising. The church therefore, needs to send out the message loud and clear that fathers play a critical role in the life of the family, they are needed, and that God expects something of them. Fathers you will have a powerful impact upon your family if you connect in three crucial areas.
1. The role of the father is to connect with God.
2. The role of the father is to connect with his family.
3. The role of the father is to connect with his church.
We need for politicians to stop taking communion one day and going back the next day to push and vote on bills that are not of good moral thinking, such as gambling, abortion or euthanasia. Only God has the right to begin and end life. They need to stop passing bills that okay immoral deeds and acts by declaring everything as a freedom or gray area that is now right. They need to stop taking God and the Ten Commandments out of our lives and schools, to restore them once again in our everyday way of living. Many people have become rather casual about receiving communion.
Father Corapi said that New York had zero abortions for a week after 9/11. They had to give them away free to get them started again. People filled churches and prayer became the thing to do and no one was publicly ashamed of it. But it didn't take long to fall back in the old ways of living and life. It was business as usual again.
Today when we turn on the local news and read the newspapers we hear and read about:
Children that have been physically and sexually abused.
Drowning babies and children.
Putting a child's feet in scalding water.
Micro waving a baby to death.
Burning a baby up in a coal stove.
Slamming a baby against the wall and killing it.
Slamming a baby against a table killing it.
Shaking a baby to death or causing serious injury.
Children killing children.
Police stationed in schools.
No respect for others by adults or children.
Children locked in a car while the father drank beer in bar where their mother was the bartender.
There are many more but I wont go into them here. But the fact is that Satan wants our children dead.
As I watch television at times I see and hear things that shock, anger and disgust me by their moral and explicit content. Each show trying to outdo the other with no regard for our children who may be watching or listening. There are even commercials that I consider x rated and disgusting.
There used to be red light districts in certain sections of some cities. But there are no more old-fashioned red light districts. America is now one humongous red light district.
However it is now time to be merciful, to pray and fast for many sinners who occupy decision making positions in the church, the U.S.Senate, the U.S. Congress, the supreme court the presidents and Governorships of the world, as well as priests and clergymen. We must imitate God by being merciful to them. Let us love the sinner, but hate the sin. Let us prove that we are children of God by praying for these leaders who violate so many of God's Commandments. As I read Paul’s letter to the Romans in chapters 1 & 2, I think about how it applies to our society today. How we are:
Inventors of injurious things
Disobedient to parents
False to agreements
Have no natural affection
Paul says, although we know full well the righteous decree of God that these practices of such things are deserving of death. We not only keep on doing them but approve those practicing them. How well do we examine those running for office? How do we vote? God will render to each one according to his works. Everlasting life to those who seek glory and honor and incorruptibleness by endurance in work that is good. However, for those who are contentious and who disobey the truth but obey unrighteousness there will be wrath and anger. Tribulation and distress upon the soul of every man who works what is injurious.
When I was a young boy in the 1940's and our country was at war, we were a country of about 160 million people. People attended church and Sunday school as well as other church functions. All churches did well with attendance and finances. Today we are a nation of double that population, and churches are closing their doors. This ratio tells us that truly broad is the road and broad is the gate that leads to destruction and many will enter there in.
Back in the late 60's and 70's we weren't vigilant and some parents got caught napping by becoming permissive in allowing their children to dress the fashion, attend unsupervised parties, do drugs, be promiscuous and even be arrested, and ultimately stop attending church and developing the attitude of I'm OK, Your OK.
You see once created, souls last forever and their eternal destination is ultimately either Heaven or Hell. God doesn't make junk! Man makes junk!
Can you imagine what it will be like when the Lord withdraws his presence from us? Can you imagine the situation of the unsaved souls here on earth when we have no one who hears or answers our prayers? As one picture painted by the Psalmist, when he asks "will the Lord cast off forever?" Will He be favorable no more? Is His mercy clean gone forever? Does His presence fail forever more? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger shut up his tender mercies? Just remember God cares more about you than you do.
God made us to know, love and serve Him in this world, so that we could be happy with Him forever in Heaven. This teaching should be taught to all of our young children.
Our country needs a prayer and revival crusade, praying with our own children and within our own churches. Attending church on Sunday is the bare minimum of keeping God's commandment to "keep Holy the Sabbath Day," all Christians are called to do more than the bare minimum.
Laura Lee listens to a Christian radio station and she was telling me about a Rev. James Kennedy, who passed away early this month. He was a televangelist of a mega church that has 10,000 members, and how his death wasn't reported by the news media, like the other news of today's world has. She said they played one of his sermons on the radio, and I want to repeat a part of it as she told me adding some words of my own.
In his sermon he told about how today we need to be bold and unafraid, to make known our beliefs and worshipping of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We need to be as bold as the groups that are out there pushing homosexuality, abortions, evolution and the ACLU groups who are bullying us and causing us as Christians to be fearful, unheard groups. What are we afraid of? We need to stand up for the Lord. We are His army and if we don't take up the cause who will? We just can't stand around and whimper and act as if it doesn't matter. Sure we'll have some different kinds of casualties, just as any war does. But better to be a casualty for the Lord than a keeper of the pits and fires of hell for Satan.
So I ask you these questions: Have we as Americans or the world gone to far? Is He going to let us destroy ourselves by moral destruction from within? Is He going to withdraw His presence from us so that we will seek but not find Him? Are we going to be destroyed as others have? Are we entering into the last days?
We know that the Lord will not allow us to continue on as we are.
So I ask you again, is the hand writing on the wall? You be the judge.
And finally as a Christian, an American, husband, father, grandfather, and a veteran I am deeply concerned for our country and those who are lost. Because of the vast number of those choosing the broad road and making it seem hopeless, I ask all Christians to join me in praying for our family members, our relatives and our friends. Perhaps one person, one family or one friend at a time will bring about revival and bring America back to becoming a nation pleasing to God.
Let me ask you, where will you spend eternity?
