Is life pressing in on you? Do you feel like running yet you're stuck? I feel a little of that this morning. I have a column to write and I don't know what to write about. I've run from it as long as I can. As my deadline approaches I hope for a lightning bolt of inspiration to shout, "Write about…" This is typical of me when I'm stuck. I expect God to shout, when the truth is, He often whispers.
In the bible there's a story about a man named Elijah. Elijah's problem was much bigger than mine is this morning. Elijah was on the run from a mean queen who swore that within 24 hours she would wring his God fearing neck. Terrified, Elijah found himself hiding in a cave. In that hour I imagine Elijah was hoping to hear from God in a "big" way. But God did not come to Elijah in a big way. He came in "a gentle whisper." As I think about that story I wonder what the Lord is whispering to me. I think he is saying, "Why do you always assume you are alone? I am here. Just turn on your computer, open a document, and know that I am helping." What wonderful words. Today His whisper has carried me through. Are you stuck? Listen for His whisper.
And the Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart…but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 1 Kings 19:11-12 NIV
