The Pathway To Healing
by: Dana Huffman
I had a toothache for days and was glad when I finally got in to see the dentist. As I sat in his chair he began to diagnose my problem, poking all around my tooth with a metal instrument. I felt no pain. "Hmmm," he said. He then left the room and returned with a piece of ice, which he rubbed all over my tooth. I felt no discomfort. He was baffled and so was I. Finally he asked, "Are you taking anything?" "Yes," I replied, "the pain is so bad I'm taking tons of Advil." "I'm sorry," my dentist said kindly as he took off his gloves, "I won't be able to help you until you stop masking your pain." As I got up from the chair I was embarrassed. I had come to him for help, yet I had prevented him from helping me. I didn't want to come off my painkillers, but I wanted genuine healing. I knew I had to make a choice.
Sometimes we have a heartache. Our pain is so great we are desperate to mask it, hide it, run from it, or ignore it. All the while the abscess in our heart threatens to eat away at us until we lose something far more valuable than a tooth.
Jesus is much kinder and far more compassionate than the very best dentist. He wants to help and He can. We may have to hurt intensely for a moment, but I believe it is worth the true healing He offers. Do you have a heartache that you have been hiding? Today you may want to consider asking Jesus for the grace to face your pain. When Jesus drills out what ails you, what He fills you with is better than pure gold!
"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." 2 Corinthians 12:9
