The Stairway To Heaven

In Genesis 28 a man named Jacob is doing nothing but sleeping when God approaches and says, "I am the Lord. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you are lying. All peoples on earth will be blessed through you... I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go." Wow. What kind of a person gets such a promise from God? Jacob must have been a good guy right? Looking at the story closely we discover that Jacob is in fact not "a good guy." He has fled home because he has deceived his father and stolen from his brother. Yet we find God deliberately coming to him with what? A judgment? No. A promise. God promises Jacob an inheritance and His care. And Jacob responds with these words, "This is the gate of heaven."
Our God has a long history of amazing people with grace. In our sorry state other god's would come at us with judgment. Other god's would require acts of service or penance. Not our God. Our God knows that what sinners need is a promise. And he offers it in Jesus-- who says, "I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved." (John. 10:9 NIV) Have you made the decision to accept and live under the mercy of God? Having stumbled on the gate of heaven, have you entered?
"When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners... Someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners." Romans 5:6-8 NLT
